  1. I am really looking forward to seeing Fannies Last Supper. Thanks for sharing!
    Happy Thanksgiving!

  2. I saw Fannie’s Last Supper last night. I was absolutely riveted. VERY well done. I could not tear myself away for the whole hour. I truly felt as though you transported your audience back in time.

  3. I watched it yesterday afternoon and it was fascinating. At times, it was like watching a sporting event as I found myself routing for Erin, particularly as she tried to get the rissoles just right. I loved the photo of Chris and Erin that was used at the end of the show. Fannie’s Last Supper was a tremendous achievement and you were right in calling it a culinary thriller!

  4. Can’t wait to see the program, I have my DVR set so that I can re-watch without the holiday interruptions.
I am still very interested in getting two copies of the book signed. If you can email me with instructions on how to do so, I’d greatly appreciate it!
    Thank you,
    Suzy

  5. Our local PBS affiliate, Oregon Public Broadcasting, aired this wonderful documentary last week and will air it again in the next few days (and of course I will have to see it again!). I plan to buy the book today. Mr. Kimball – this work of yours is tremendously enjoyable and for fellow Victoriana-philes (or is that a word?) a stupendous treat. THANK YOU for the documentary and the book.

  6. I don’t know if Chris reads these comments or not,but since I tend to watch the show alot ,I noticed the amount of arm waving he does while he talks drives me nuts.I wonder if he does it in everyday talk and at home but if there is any way he can hold back a little I would be able to focus a bit more on what he’s saying than whether hes going to swing his hand into someone’s face of the edge of the counter top. Please take this in to consideration.

  7. I am so sorry to have missed it on Thanksgiving..will it be airing again on KQED…I’m in R.I….would love to catch it…!!!!

  8. It really enjoyed watching the show. The mock turtle soup was the most surprising for me. My father is very fond of head cheese from his younger days when his family would butcher animals themselves.

I’m really happy that the folks at America’s Test Kitchen is preserving this part of our history.

I hope you are thinking about similar projects for the future.

  10. Caught the show. It was amazing!

  11. Just saw Fannie’s Last Supper on klrn today, watching it tomorrow at 7pm with husband.
LOVE THE SHOW! What more can I say.

Chris, I also feel like I belong in the Victorian era as long as I never had to wear a long dress and tight corset in a 95 degree kitchen.

Here’s a trivia tidbit about life back then I discovered:
When ladies dried their freshly washed hair back in those days they brushed it over a bucket of warm coals that wafted hot air up. Yep, they even had hair dryers! :]

Definitely going to buy the Fannie’s Last Supper book as soon as I locate it.

Please do more antique recipe shows, this one was absolutely stunning!

  12. thank you so much for the Fanny Farmer dinner with all the effort and planning my uncle/aunt had a place in Northfield Vt where I visited as a kid

  13. While I have not followed the test kitchen show, I absolutely loved Fannie’s Last Supper!! I remember those stoves, lifting up the lids with some kind of iron. I love how you re-created the old times and got so into it. A lot of hard work, but I want those Baby Artichokes! I was drooling at that point. Also the “jellies” reminded me of the old days. Weren’t they called “aspic” (aspics)? There used to be more vegetable, salad kind of gels, rather than the sweet Jell-O today, that were really yummy. I think you can make them with Knox gelatin that is unflavored, but it has been too many years, so I can’t remember the flavor of Jell-O you can use with veggies. I remember the crunchy veggies in them, like celery. They were so good!

I saw the N.Y. Times guy that was on the “On the Road Again, Spain” show with Gwynneth Paltrow eating your feast. Would have loved to have been there. Maybe some other dinners with half the number of courses would be nice and not so much work. Another big part of it was getting out the nice china. I used to play with the utensils that did things, like sugar tongs and melon ballers, etc.

Makes me greatly miss my folks and Nana and Granddad, and the 1950s. We used Glass Wax, this opaque pink goopy stuff in a can that stunk of ammonia and dabbed it with a sponge through stencils to make designs on the windows. Then it just cleaned the windows and came off easily. That was before the days of Windex. Stringing popcorn and cranberries can really be a great family time. The kids always had some roll in the cooking, setting the table and things.

So you and your family have a very Merry Christmas, and I’m 1000% positive Fannie approves from heaven.

  14. I just saw the program today and was absolutely riveted. Could tell early on that between Fannie’s story and the way that it was told/demonstrated in this film, that we were in for something–wonderful. Well done! Will we see the film on ATK’s website in the Video-On-Demand section of past shows? Hope so!! Also, CK cleans up pretty good when compared to the pictures of him sporting his “Deliverance look” taken while on his hunting trips.

  15. I totally blew it! I missed Fannie’s Last Supper!! I read somewhere that it was going to air on PBS on Jan 1 2011, so I found it on the Comcast schedule and set it up to record, but when it started, it was just another episode of ATK. Now I can’t find it on any PBS schedule. Is it going to air again ANYWHERE??? I really wanted to see it.

  16. I missed it as well :-

    • (oops, apparently my little smiley broke the comment..)

Any chance this is going to be out on DVD? Please?

  17. I, too, missed the showing and have been looking for it ever since. No luck. I teach a high school chefs training course and would love to have the DVD to use in class. Any hope?
    Amy

  18. I to missed the airing and would love to get a copy of it. I heard it was amazing.
    Carol

  19. What a wonderful, fascinating, engrossing, enlightening, transfixing documentary!
I’ve never seen anything like it.

And I was so envious…not of the diners but those in the kitchen believe it or not.

I would love to have this on DVD.

  20. I’m sorry to say that I never heard of “Fannie’s Last Supper” until my niece gave me the book for Christmas. If there’s a DVD of the dinner, I’ll definitely buy it. Regarding your book, I give it the highest praise possible: I was very sorry to have finished reading it and I know that after I do my taxes, I’ll reread it. Absolutely delightful. Thank you.

  21. When will it air again? I would love to be able to see this.

  22. I would love to purchase a copy of this show! I missed the beginning today, 1/30/11 and it will not air locally until the end of March. I remember my grandmother cooking on a free-standing coal fired oven into the 1970’s! (Poor woman). This was… (pick one) enlightening, educational, inspiring, nostalgic, challenging… and on and on. I challenge Christopher Kimball to spend a couple of weeks, non-stop, cooking in that environment. 😉 Jeff

  23. I only just recently became aware of Fannie’s Last Supper, both the book and the pbs show. I bought the book today (Feb 4) but would love to see the show. Is there any way to see it online in Canada or perhaps PBS will reair it and if so, when (I watch Mountain Lake PBS from Plattsburgh, NY.)
    Thank you,
    Amy

  24. My great husband came home with a copy of Fannie’s Last Supper from the library and dropped it in my lap and said he knew I would be requesting it, so he picked it up to save me the trouble. Once I started the book, I couldn’t put it down. ANY foodie would adore it, I have already recommended it to some that I know. Somehow, I missed the show when it aired here in Tulsa and woud love to see it. What can you tell me about a possible rerun? The details that were included in the book both about the work involved in preparing the recipes and the amount of research that went into the history of the period, etc., was fascinating. I have my mothers copy of the cookbook, from the 1920’s. She had covered the cookbook with oilcloth and the cover she made was packed full of handwritten recipes and newspaper and magazine recipes that she was saving. The amount of spills on the recipes told me how many times they had been prepared. I watch your PBS show frequently and go to the Test Kitchen site often for recipes. Your expertise is greatly appreciated and I so enjoyed the book. Thank you for taking the time to write it for your public. It was a joy to read. Sincerely, Liz Elliott

  25. HI,
Loved the PBS show….Where can I watch it again? Is Fannie’s Last Supper available on DVD?
    Please advise

  26. I’ve been searching and searching…and no luck. Is there a DVD one can purchase of your tremendous PBS program “Fannie’s Last Supper” ? Is it possible that a DVD of “Fannie’s Last Supper” will be offered during a pledge drive somewhere in the U.S.A. ?

I saw the “Fannie’s Last Supper” and it enjoyed it very much and thought it was entertaining and informative.

I would love to get a copy of “Fannie’s Last Supper” to give to my mother-in-law for her 75th birthday. I have the companion book, but would love to give her an opportunity to see the program. She is an excellent cook and loves learning about recipes and the history of food.
Thank you for letting me know if there is anyway I can get a DVD of “Fannie’s Last Supper.”

  27. Is the DVD of the show available anywhere?
    Thanks, JG

  28. WHY ARE THERE NO POSTED ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS ON THIS BLOG?

IS THERE GOING TO BE A DVD MADE AVAILABLE OF *FANNIE’S LAST SUPPER?*

  29. I just left a message on the ATK website to ask where and when Fannie’s Last Supper might be aired this coming winter. It’s disconcerting to see that there doesn’t seem to have been much activity on this website by ATK or Chris Kimball (or his staff). I loved it when I saw it and am one of the people who would buy a DVD in a heartbeat if it were available.

    • Thanks for the update. I just hope I get achance to see it. I loved the book – my Book Club in Santa Monica is reading it for the holidays. But I have yet to see any word on a local airtime – last year or this year – and I, too, would love a commercial DVD of the show!!

  30. I agree Charlotte. After all the time, money, and effort that went into this production, not to mention the success it seems to have been judging by the rave reviews, it seems ATK et al have just tossed it aside. I sure wish they would air it again this Christmas season. Come on Chris K., throw us a bone here.

  31. I caught this show in the middle. I absolutely loved what I saw. Can this be purchased on DVD? Just ordered the book, but would love to watch again!

  32. Why hasn’t there been a DVD on ‘Fannie’s Last Supper?”

  33. Agreed. It’s annoying when public television continues to beg for money while remaining clueless about how to sell in-demand product.

  34. i found it at the library and am not going to bring it back. charge me the fee, i dont care, i have to have this dvd in my life!!

    • you are going to steal it so that no one else gets a chance to see it? not cool. you are a dud.

    • I’m confused at how the Library can get a copy of DVD that apparently doesn’t exist? (And I agree with Christopher)

      • It has never been issued on DVD. I can only imagine that “ellen” is either trying to create a stir, is referring to the book – not the DVD or is simply wasting our time. My vote is for: simply wasting our time. Again, dud!

  35. I would love to be able to buy this culinary and visual extravaganza on DVD. It would be fabulous gift and could become part of holiday traditions!

  36. I too am desperately wanting to see the DVD…the book was so entertaining! Even my husband, who is definitely NOT a cook, is anxious to see it as well. PLEASE tell us it will be for sale SOON!

  37. Please! The DVD!!!!!

  52. I stumbled upon this astounding documentary by chance. It had been a long day. I just wanted to sit with the cats and watch something quality on my local public television channel. “Fannie’s Last Supper” blinked onto the screen as I fired up the TV. I didn’t move for 60 minutes. I was riveted to the couch. Bravo to Mr. Kimball and his amazing team for the recreation of one of the most spectacular moments in American culinary history brought back to life by the one and only America’s Test Kitchen! I wish this show was available on DVD. It would be in many holiday stockings adorning the fireplace!

    Cheers!

  53. DVD – Further to my 12/10/13 post, I went ahead and ordered the DVD from cookscountryhouse.com. (I also saw the link to this on the American Public Television site.) It appears to be a legitimate disc, and I truly hope it is. Wonderful show! Wonderful book!

  54. Dear Christopher,
There is an anecdote about Fanny as a dinner guest.
When she was invited to dinner she would always carry
two clean ladies handkerchiefs in her purse, neatly folded.
If there was a cream sauce or soup which she particularly
liked, she would surreptitiously dip a corner of one
handkerchief in the sauce, fold the handkerchief over,
and bring it back to her kitchen. From the food stain on
the cloth she was able to exactly duplicate the dish, with
    correct proportions and seasonings…exactly!

What was the second handkerchief for? Why, her nose, of
    course!

A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you
    and yours,

    John S. King

  55. I really enjoyed this video and am hoping to find it on DVD. I am getting 404 not found on the CooksCountryHouse.com website. Is this item no longer available?
